Individual Direction: Arrangements and Fees
Read through the list of spiritual directors, choose one you are drawn to, and call them to set up a first meeting (no referral is needed.) Some offer a free first session. The director will tell you where to meet on campus or how to get to their office off campus. It may take a few meetings to get the feel of spiritual direction. Usually individual direction is scheduled monthly, for an hour. Some directors drive quite a distance to PTS so please give as much notice as possible if you need to cancel.
If you are enrolled in the Student Health Benefit Plan, and choose a director from the first group of names on the list, your copayment is $15 if you meet on campus and $10 if you meet off campus. The director submits an invoice to the health plan for additional reimbursement which is only possible after you return the pink form to Scheide Hall. The benefit covers 12 sessions in a plan year (9/1 – 8/31). If you are in a season of discernment or otherwise prefer to meet more frequently than monthly, you can do that.
If you are not in the SHBP, or you choose a director who is not an SHBP provider, your copayment will vary according to the director’s sliding scale and your finances. Many directors generously charge students and spouses only $25/session.
Group Direction: Arrangements and Fees
Group direction is typically 90-minutes, every other week, with 4 students or spouses, or three couples. You can give your name to Melissa Haupt in Scheide Hall, and she will contact you when 3 others have expressed interest in group direction. Or you can check with your friends, form your own group, and give your availability to Melissa who will seek a director and location on campus for you. Groups can start at any point in the year. The copayment for students and spouses is $10 per group session, billed in advance to student accounts. Insurance plans are not engaged. Financial aid is available.
Group direction is different from a typical prayer group or Bible study, and intellectual debate is referred back to precepts! In group direction, participants hold sacred what each one shares about their faith journey and listening for God in their lives. Intellectually, many individuals believe God loves and supports them, but through direction, they are able to experience God’s embrace more deeply. Because benefits and blessings increase as trust deepens, participation beyond one semester is encouraged but not required. Group direction sessions are separate from and do not count toward the 12 sessions of individual direction.
