Individual Direction: Arrangements and Fees
Read through the list of spiritual directors, choose one you are drawn to, and call them to set up a first meeting (no referral is needed.) Some offer a free first session. The director will tell you where to meet them on campus. It may take a few meetings to get the feel of spiritual direction. Usually individual direction is one hour each month. Some directors live far from PTS so please inquire about their cancellation policy and give as much notice as possible if you need to cancel. Also, please reply quickly to emails from your director so they can firm up their schedule.
If you are enrolled in the Student Health Benefit Plan, and choose a director in the plan, your copayment is $15 if you meet on campus and $10 if you meet off campus paid to the director at each session. Please five a pink referral form to your director so they know you are in the plan. Bring the second pink referral form to the Counseling Office in 301 Templeton so it can be faxed to Healthsmart for your director to receive additional reimbursement beyond your copayment. Backdate the form to before your first direction session of the academic year. If you continue in direction and are in the SHBP, updated pink referral forms are needed each academic year (and also if you switch directors.) The SHBP benefit covers 12 sessions in a plan year (9/1 – 8/31). If you are in a season of discernment, you may meet more frequently than monthly. More frequent direction sessions should not replace any counseling that might be needed.
If you are not in the SHBP, your copayment will vary according to a director’s sliding scale and your finances. Most directors generously charge only $25/session and sometimes even less. Contact the Counseling Office if financial aid is required to pursue direction.
Please Note: Spiritual Directors are mandated reporters in the PTS’ Title VI and IX guidelines.
Group Direction: Arrangements and Fees
Group direction is typically 90-minutes, every other week, with 4-5 students or spouses, or three couples. You can sign up in the counseling office and be contacted when 3 others express interest in group direction. Or check with friends, form your own group, and the counseling office will seek a director and location for you. Groups can start at any point in the year and may run for 6 sessions or longer if participants wish to continue. The $10 cost for each group session is billed to your student account at the start of the series. Insurance is not involved. Financial aid is available – email email@example.com.
Group direction is different from a typical prayer group or Bible study, and intellectual debate is referred back to precepts! In group direction, participants hold sacred what each one shares about their faith journey and listening for God in their lives. Intellectually, many individuals believe God loves and supports them, but through direction, they are able to experience God’s embrace more deeply. Because benefits and blessings increase as trust deepens, participation beyond one semester is encouraged but not required.
