While Trinity Counseling Service is the Seminary’s primary in-network provider, students and spouses enrolled in the Student Health Benefit Plan have direct access to a large, additional pool of mental health specialists in the Princeton area. These counselors have expertise in a variety of therapeutic approaches and specialized training for working with many different issues. Some are also ordained, and the group is ethnically diverse. Most of the in-network providers are listed below. For help in identifying additional in-network providers, students may contact the Office of Student Counseling.
While not required, there are advantages to meeting first with the Director of Student Counseling to talk over the “fit” of a referral before setting up a first session with someone on the list below. Why? There are a number of additional therapists in the SHBP panel who did not authorize putting their contact information on our website. The Director of Student Counseling, Nancy Schongalla-Bowman, knows all of the SHBP providers and can help you discern who to see. She also will ask for your written permission to contact the SHBP therapist to share some of what you have discussed with her to support getting started with that therapist. She can acquaint you with other opportunities and resources on campus such as spiritual direction, self-assessments, workshops, or groups. And, if you are not sure about working with an SHBP therapist, she can discuss your other two options, which are to refer you to Trinity Counseling Service or to one of the four on-campus counselors.
SHBP Benefit for Off-Campus Support and Psychotherapy Groups
Students and spouses enrolled in the SHBP can affordably participate in off campus groups run by providers in the Specialty Counseling Network with only a $10 copayment per group meeting (paid directly to the facilitator). This benefit has been added because it is not always possible to find enough students available at the same time to run a particular group on campus. Providers in the network offer groups in their own offices for those dealing with eating disorders, anxiety, depression, mindfulness meditation and stress reduction, compulsive sexual behavior etc. For help in identifying such groups, students may contact Nancy Schongalla-Bowman, the Director of Student Counseling.
How to Find a Provider and Schedule a Session:
- Below is the most current list of therapists in the Specialty Counseling Network available at a $25 copay at the time of each session, only for students and spouses enrolled in the Student Health Benefit Plan:
- You may contact the provider directly to arrange a first counseling session. Before your first session, please come to the Counseling Office in Templeton 301 and fill out a yellow referral form. This will take one minute and ensures that the therapist can receive additional remuneration from HealthSmart insurance. The forms and envelopes are on the wooden file cabinet across from Christy’s desk and each completed forms can be left in a sealed envelope on her desk. The form must be predated to before your first session.
- For those not in the SHBP, please note that the SHBP counselors are not on other insurance panels. Therefore, you would need to pay the whole fee at each session and ask if the counselor can give you a statement to submit to your insurance plan for out of network coverage. This can be quite expensive in the Princeton area. You may first want to consider on-campus counseling or meeting with someone at Trinity Counseling Service. Princeton Seminary generously makes these options very affordable.
